Acupuncture for Chronic Pain

Acupuncture is a therapy originating in traditional Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of thin, solid needles into the body at specific points and is increasingly integrated into pain treatment as a complementary, nonpharmacological approach to chronic pain management.

Evidence-based Scale

Acupuncture is a therapy that originated as part of the comprehensive traditional Chinese medicine over 2,000 years ago. Traditionally rooted in the concept of “qi” or energy, which flows through the body, disruptions or imbalances in this flow of qi are thought to produce ailment or disease. Acupuncture is the practice of inserting thin needles at critical points in the body, traditionally along meridians (considered pathways for qi) and tender spots (ashi points), to restore the proper flow of qi and restore good health. Acupuncture has been well-studied in the biomedical context, modernizing our understanding of how this treatment modality may elicit health benefits. Though the mechanism of action is not completely understood, leading hypotheses are that acupuncture activates the human body’s natural opioid system and promotes temporary, localized circulatory changes in blood flow to a specific area.
