Acupuncture for Chronic Pain
Use of acupuncture is highest among those with higher income and educational attainment, inconsistent with the burden of chronic pain disproportionately burdening those with lower income and those on public insurance.
According to National Health Interview Survey data, acupuncture was more common among women, older patients, those with higher educational attainment, and residents of the West Coast. These trends in utilization do not follow sociodemographic trends in chronic pain burden, which disproportionately impacts lower-income individuals and people with less education. Increased financial access to acupuncture, a larger acupuncture workforce, and greater geographic availability of acupuncture services may help alleviate disparities in utilization.
