Providers

Providers’ perceptions about and experience with chiropractic care, either personally or through their patients, may inhibit or facilitate their perception of it as an effective treatment for pain.

Barriers

Some providers may have limited or inaccurate information about chiropractic care, including skepticism about effectiveness, misunderstandings about the scope of chiropractic practice, and negative attitudes towards collaboration with chiropractors. This can prevent providers from referring patients to chiropractors or integrating chiropractic care into their treatment plans.

Facilitators

Healthcare professionals with positive experiences with chiropractic care, either personally or through co-management, are more likely to view it favorably. This may include appreciation for the nonpharmacologic approach of chiropractic care and/or knowledge of evidence supporting its effectiveness. These positive attitudes can encourage providers to recommend chiropractic care to their patients and collaborate with chiropractors to provide comprehensive pain care.
