Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Pain
Financial and other barriers may prevent full benefit from Mindfulness-Based Interventions.
Individuals from differing economic and demographic backgrounds, who may particularly benefit from Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs), may experience challenges accessing these services. For example, Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement, developed specifically for individuals with opioid misuse and Opioid Use Disorder who often rely on programs like Medicare and Medicaid for healthcare, is unlikely to be covered by these programs. A systematic review of MBI (not exclusively for pain) found these interventions tended to be less effective for persons of low socioeconomic status and from different racial and ethnic groups. Thus, those seeking to implement MBIs for pain should carefully consider its affordability and effectiveness in the target population and setting.
