Physical Therapy
Accounting for factors such as age, socioeconomic status, and individual patient needs are critical in addressing access to and outcomes of physical therapy.
Physical therapists’ consideration of population characteristics is important to ensure individualized and effective treatment planning. Accounting for factors such as age, socioeconomic status, and individual needs is important to ensure effective and accessible care. Physical therapists should be attentive to age-related changes in musculoskeletal, neurological, and cognitive function and sensitive to age-related limitations that may impact treatment planning and outcomes. Financial constraints, access to transportation, and insurance coverage can significantly impact a patient's ability to access and adhere to physical therapy. Each patient's unique needs, including medical history, functional limitations, goals, and preferences, should be considered to develop an individualized treatment plan. Broader social determinants of health, such as access to safe and accessible environments and social support networks, are also important to consider in comprehensive PT. Despite its established evidence base, gaps exist in the scientific literature regarding optimal treatment and implementation strategies across populations.
