Educational Resources
There are a number of existing resources and briefs, and associated training resources, for those seeking to implement medications for opioid use disorder such as naltrexone.
- The CATCH trial investigators have created a Clinical Guide to Support the Implementation of Addiction Consult Services. This clinical guide describes teaching and technical assistance activities supported during the trial and includes the CATCH Manual, which can be modified to meet the needs and context of other hospitals: https://journals.lww.com/journaladdictionmedicine/fulltext/2024/05000/a_clinical_guide_to_support_the_implementation_of.1.aspx https://www.hhs.gov/opioids/treatment/resources-opioid-treatment-providers/index.html
- SAMHSA’s Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP 63: Medications for Opioid Use Disorder) reviews the three FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder and contains a useful summary of naltrexone, including contraindications, dosing considerations, and practical guidance on conducting a naloxone challenge before initiating naltrexone.
