Systems and Policies

Providers may not see additional reimbursement for integrating mindfulness-based interventions for substance use into their existing services.

Barriers

Mindfulness-based interventions are not often covered separately by socialized healthcare plans such as Medicaid or Medicare. Providers may need to bundle them with other services and subsequently not see additional reimbursement despite the added time and labor costs.

Facilitators

Surveys suggest that the public has generally positive impressions of meditation and mindfulness, which can potentially increase a system or community’s receptivity to mindfulness-based interventions.
