Systems and Policies

Payors can limit access to specific types of care or impose multiple cost-sharing measures on an individual visit when several providers are involved in the care.

Barriers

Dissemination of interdisciplinary programs may be limited due to a lack of input from individuals receiving care and payers, leading to rigid treatment protocols that are not always relevant or of interest to care recipients. In studies of interdisciplinary pain programs, insurance coverage for treatments affected what types of care were received, negatively affecting clinical outcomes.

Healthcare plans and interdisciplinary care clinician billing procedures often lack alignment, leading to patients being charged separately for each clinician/service and accruing multiple co-pays for an episode of care. Additionally, some services, such as mental health and complementary and integrated health treatments, may not be covered by insurance providers, adding an additional financial burden to care recipients.
