Educational Resources

An array of publicly available resources exists for those seeking to deliver Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Substance Use Disorder (CBT-SUD), which could be adapted to deliver Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Opioid Use Disorder (CBT-OUD).

  • Society of Clinical Psychology Website about CBT-SUD: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Substance Use Disorders | Society of Clinical Psychology

Of note, this website gives CBT-SUD a strong rating, while we give CBT-OUD a moderate rating, due to there being less research supporting the model’s use with patients with opioid use disorder.
  • The Yale Adherence and Competence Scale (YCAS) Rating Scale: Guidelines
    • This scale is a useful resource to evaluate therapist adherence and competence to SUD behavioral treatment methods, including CBT.
  • CBT4CBT Website
    • CBT4CBT is a computer-based CBT-SUD that is only offered via providers (meaning an individual provider or organization must purchase the program to offer it to patients). The website summarizes research evidence on the program’s effectiveness and provides information for providers who are currently offering or considering offering the program. The program is also available in Spanish.
  • The Beck Institute
    • The Beck Institute is a nationally renowned training institute in CBT. While the program does not specialize in CBT-SUD, the training will provide a strong foundation in transferrable CBT principles. The Institute offers a robust training catalog of opportunities that vary substantially in price.
