CBT-CP can be tailored for different individuals, settings, and requirements by adapting and tailoring language, utilizing artificial intelligence, and developing financial strategies to address parity in insurance coverage for mental health treatments.

Tailoring CBT-CP strategies to specific individuals and audiences can help increase access and effectiveness. In one instance, a literacy-adapted protocol for CBT-CP called “Learning About My Pain (LAMP)” was developed to help individuals with low -literacy levels and in rural areas engage with CBT-CP. LAMP took an existing CBT-CP protocol, adjusted the readability and made other adjustments to the layout and delivery of the treatment recipient workbook to make the content more accessible and easier to understand.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help further adapt, tailor and make CBT-CP programs more accessible. One study has shown that virtually-delivered CBT-CP can be an effective alternative to standard therapist-delivered CBT-CP. AI presents further opportunities to adapt CBT-CP to tailor messaging to individual needs and scale CBT-CP access, although the real-world impact of AI on CBT-CP is still under investigation.

To help facilitate reimbursement of CBT-CP, one study suggested that providers bill their services using “Health and Behavior” codes. Through these codes, CBT-CP services are eligible to be covered under the medical portion of an individual’s insurance, which can address potential limitations associated with mental health care coverage policies. Further, this can allow the provider to avoid assigning a psychiatric diagnosis code if it is not appropriate.
