Client/Patient

Individuals may be overwhelmed by care involving several types of providers or treatments, but access to information, along with shared decision-making and goal-setting, can assist with navigating complex care.

Barriers

Some individuals participating in interdisciplinary care may feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed when participating in visits with multiple clinicians who are new to them.

Facilitators

Qualitative studies among individuals with chronic pain and clinicians suggest that individuals with chronic pain often seek out interdisciplinary care and are often highly motivated for treatment, but may be unaware of what specifically is available to them. Providing a list of available treatment options and working with an individual to tailor their treatment plan based on their preferences can serve as a facilitator.

Individuals participating in interdisciplinary treatments tend to be more likely to complete and be satisfied with treatment when they are actively involved in decision-making and goal-setting related to their specific course of treatment.
