Acupuncture for Chronic Pain

Acupuncture is a recommended first-line nonpharmacological intervention for certain forms of chronic pain, and individuals may experience long-lasting benefits from treatment.

Evidence-based Scale

Acupuncture may be an appropriate treatment for anyone who experiences chronic pain and is interested in a nonpharmacological or integrated approach to pain management. A 2017 study specifically aimed to investigate the duration of benefit sustained by acupuncture treatment among individuals with chronic pain. This meta-analysis of 24 trials, including over 7,500 individuals with chronic pain, demonstrated that 70-90% of the pain reduction reported after acupuncture treatment was sustained up to 12 months after treatment.
