Educational Resources

Educational resources can help familiarize providers with acupuncture as an evidence-based, low-risk, promising option for chronic pain management.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs offers an Evidence Map of Acupuncture that provides a comprehensive review of the evidence on acupuncture treatments. The evidence guide is extensive, including over 1,500 randomized controlled trials. An updated Evidence Map of Acupuncture was published in 2023 and included 63 studies categorized into 41 conditions. This guide is appropriate for providers and researchers seeking a deep understanding of the quality of evidence regarding acupuncture for chronic pain and other pain conditions.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality published a 2020 systematic review of noninvasive, nonpharmacological treatments for chronic pain, including a thorough review of acupuncture as a treatment modality. This guide focuses less specifically on acupuncture and instead covers other nonpharmacological pain management options that may be of interest to some readers.
