Research Questions
Further research may assess whether methadone can be extended to new settings, such as community or home-based settings, to reduce the many known barriers to receiving daily methadone dosing at an opioid treatment program.
Future research questions regarding methadone may include:
- Extending methadone access to novel and more convenient settings, such as providing methadone from community retail pharmacies or facilitating take-home dosing, and evaluating patient outcomes across these extended methadone access settings
- Evaluating which implementation strategies are most effective at supporting medical providers in providing methadone from new settings, in both program implementation and sustainment
- Exploring patient preferences for either methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone, and evaluating the comparative effectiveness of these medications across various patient and provider characteristics
