Research Questions

Further research may assess whether methadone can be extended to new settings, such as community or home-based settings, to reduce the many known barriers to receiving daily methadone dosing at an opioid treatment program.

Future research questions regarding methadone may include:

  1. Extending methadone access to novel and more convenient settings, such as providing methadone from community retail pharmacies or facilitating take-home dosing, and evaluating patient outcomes across these extended methadone access settings
  2. Evaluating which implementation strategies are most effective at supporting medical providers in providing methadone from new settings, in both program implementation and sustainment
  3. Exploring patient preferences for either methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone, and evaluating the comparative effectiveness of these medications across various patient and provider characteristics
