Research Questions

There are many opportunities for additional study to optimize the implementation of physical therapy.

Future research questions regarding physical therapy implementation may include:

  • Improving Integration in Established Healthcare Settings: Investigating and evaluating the most effective strategies for embedding PT services within established healthcare settings, such as primary care clinics, hospitals, and long-term care facilities. This could focus on optimizing referral pathways, improving interprofessional collaboration, and measuring the impact on patient outcomes and healthcare and implementation costs.
  • Innovation in Physical Therapy Delivery Modes: Exploring the effective integration of PT into emerging healthcare delivery modes, such as telehealth platforms, home health programs, and community wellness initiatives. This research could assess which implementation strategies best support physical therapists and other providers in these new delivery approaches. Important outcomes will include health outcomes and implementation outcomes, including uptake and implementation cost.
  • Identifying and Overcoming Implementation Barriers: Systematically identifying the barriers and facilitators to implementing and optimizing PT across diverse patient populations and healthcare settings (e.g., rural vs. urban). This research could compare the effectiveness of different implementation strategies in addressing these challenges to improve patient access, utilization, and personalization.
  • Identifying and Overcoming Access Barriers: Access to PT, including geographic and financial access, is cited as a barrier to wider adoption. Research investigating interventions to address access barriers may help scale wider program adoption and penetration (i.e., the number of individuals receiving care).
  • Utilizing Hybrid Research Designs: Conducting hybrid implementation-effectiveness studies that simultaneously evaluate both the clinical effectiveness of PT interventions and the feasibility and scalability of the strategies used to implement them. This approach would help accelerate the translation of evidence-based PT practices into routine clinical care and inform health system policies.
