Provider
Providers’ limited care delivery capacity, beliefs around the appropriateness and effectiveness of treatment, and CBT training can impact the implementation of CBT-CP.
Barriers
A survey of CBT-trained mental health providers showed that not having enough room in the schedule and high existing workloads were the most cited reasons for either not implementing CBT at all or preventing them from using CBT with more individuals.
Similar to individuals receiving care, providers also cite skepticism around the effectiveness of CBT relative to other treatment options for the management of chronic pain. Provider feedback shows that some believe benefits may be relevant but short-lived and that effectiveness did not meet expectations.
Facilitators
Among Veterans Health Administration (VHA) mental health providers who received training in CBT-CP, follow-up surveys indicate that providers believed CBT-CP was appropriately effective, adhered to treatment protocols, and were likely to recommend CBT-CP for veterans.
